About me

Daniel Salzberg · VP of Operations, BioMech Health · Richmond, Virginia

I've spent about 25 years in healthcare technology. Most of that time has come down to the same job: figure out what clinicians and operations teams actually need, then find technology that gets it done without making their day harder.

Where I started

My first healthcare job was at Vidant Medical Center (now ECU Health) in Greenville, North Carolina, where I built a documentation program for the Surgical Services department. From there I went to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and ran technology for the Department of Surgery. Both jobs taught me early that the people doing the work usually know exactly what's broken. You just have to ask them.

Nine years at Bon Secours

In 2006 I moved to Richmond to join Bon Secours Health System. My first big assignment was standardizing our ancillary systems so they could connect cleanly into Epic.

One project I'm still proud of was cardiology. We had a patchwork of systems that didn't talk to each other, a couple from vendors on their way out of business, and one site was running four separate document systems. We replaced all of it with a single cardiovascular system tied into Epic. Physicians could open images right from the patient's record, and structured reporting ended the need for transcription. Healthcare IT News wrote about it in 2011.

Later I was asked to be the technology lead for our Medicare Shared Savings Program ACO, which put me right in the middle of the shift to population health. I also worked on our HIE strategy, telehealth, Meaningful Use Stage 2, and our clinical transformation and innovation councils, and I was the IS lead for the medical group.

Consulting

After a short stint as chief technical advisor at Creo Wellness, I started Salzberg & Associates in 2016 and ran it for nine years. I worked with health systems, physician practices and technology companies on strategy, project management, and the part that usually gets skipped: getting people to actually use the new thing. That included about a year and a half as Director of Healthcare Innovations with Strategic Solutions of Virginia, helping ambulatory practices put new programs into their day-to-day operations.

What I do now

Since April 2025 I've been VP of Operations at BioMech Health. BioMech measures how people move, in the clinic and at home. My side of it is operations: getting customers set up, trained and supported, and making sure the program works inside a real practice, not just in a demo.

How I work

I start with the workflow, not the software. If a new tool adds steps for a nurse or the front desk, it won't last no matter how good it looks. I also believe that if data isn't captured the same way every time, it might as well not exist, because nobody downstream can use it. And most technology problems turn out to be people and process problems, so that's usually where I look first.

Outside of work

I live in the Richmond area. I write about healthcare, technology and operations in my Healthcare, Measured series. Years ago I got to drive a BMW M3 at Virginia International Raceway, and I still have the videos to prove it.
